Heritage Heroes Civic Award

Matt discussed the idea of reinvigorating and expanding the Heritage Hero Awards which the Yankalilla District Council first conducted in 2018. Nominations would be called for during the Heritage Fleurieu Coast Festival in May 2026 and judged by a small panel with expertise in the area, including representatives of the Yankalilla and District Historical Society and the Council. The Award would be presented as part of the Australia Day Civic Awards Ceremony in January 2027. Matt suggested that there could be four categories: 1. Conservation of a historic building, 2. Sympathetic additions or alterations to a building of character, 3. Natural Heritage and 4. Person who has made a significant contribution to the heritage of the region. He asked those in attendance for their ideas and comments, and an interesting discussion followed.
