Time Travel to Meet the Mitchells
Yankalilla Cemetery, Gully House, Hoskin House, Mitchell Cottage

A Festival Fleurieu event
April 2025

Torrens Vale, Hay Flat and Bald Hills

Participants met at the Yankalilla Public Cemetery where a mock “burial ceremony” was held at the graves of George & Sarah Mitchell.

The Time Travel bus then travelled through Yankalilla, where several houses relevant to the Mitchell and Hoskin families can still be seen. Along Hay Flat Road, we met Alfred, George Mitchell's father who in 1853 had just built a house on Right Hand Gully Road, near Blackfellows Creek Sadly Alfred died shortly thereafter.

We then visited Gully House on Parawa Road the home of George’s mother & George (after she married Samuel Litheby. At Hoskin House we met Hannah White (Hoskin, Murch, Jeffery, Currie) who told us about her life including the marriage of her daughter Sarah to George Mitchell in 1875 in that very house.

Our final destination was Mitchell Cottage where George and Sarah lived for many years and raised their large family. First to greet us at Mitchell Cottage was Conrad Wornum an early settler of the region who later settled in Adelaide and held various official roles including Registrar of Dogs. He left after a brief exchange with George Mitchell himself who told us of his long and happy life in the district.

The afternoon finished with a wake (afternoon tea) hosted generously by Rob and Margy Kirk.

Yankalilla & District Historical Society supports the cultural, spiritual, ecological and economic regeneration of the Aboriginal peoples of this place assisted by the actions and power of individuals, organisations and governments.
