YDHS Friday Talk November 2022

Dr Tony Stimson—South Australians and the Anglo-Boer War

Yankalilla RSL Hall

Dr Tony Stimson, President of the South Australian Boer War Association Inc., gave a very interesting talk about South Australians involved in the Anglo-Boer War, South Australia's first war but also our 'forgotten war'. Many volunteers from the Yankalilla district fought in this war, including George Alfred Taverner, grandfather of Nigel Pile who is a member of the Yankalilla and District Historical Society and the Yankalilla Lions Club. Despite losing an arm in the war, George Taverner returned to South Austalia and continued to farm successfully in the district. Dr Stimson displayed a number of fascinating artefacts and a gentleman in the audience delighted all by displaying his grandfather's Queen Victoria chocolate tin which Queen Victoria sent to all troops serving in South Africa in 1899.
