114 Main South Rd, Yankalilla

Yankalilla

This is one of the houses that Thomas Roads built for his children. It was built about 1860 for his second son, Richard Roads. Richard and his wife Jane (nee Attrill) lived here for about 5 years, but then shifted first to Glenburn, and then Bald Hills (1874-1884). Richard, Jane and their family moved back to Yankalilla in 1884, but not into this house. Thomas and Richard exchanged homes and Thomas and his second wife Martha moved into this house. Thomas and Martha lived in the house until they died in 1892 (Thomas) and 1897 (Martha).

Richard Roads was a carrier and in 1858 he was driving for millers John and Eli Butterworth. He is reported to have won the contract to clear the first track from Yankalilla to the coast at Normanville in 1855, this being one of the first projects of the District Council. In later life he developed cancer, and he committed suicide in 1913.
