23 Hay Flat Rd, Normanville
Normanville
This typical settler's cottage, which has been lovingly preserved, was built about 1860. The land was owned by Nelson Leak (who built the Normanville Wesleyan chapel), but he leased it to George Almond.
The house is marked on the map (drawn up in 1933 by Surveyor A.J.Blakeway) of Yankalilla and Normanville as they were in 1860 from data furnished from the memory of O.J.Herbert, son of Septimane Herbert, one of the early settlers at Yankalilla. Not much is known about George Almond, but he is listed as a farmer in the Boothby Almanac. He and his wife Sarah had three children, two of whom died young. One was a three-year-old boy who died of burns after his clothes caught on fire while playing in a paddock near some hot ashes.
After the death of Nelson Leak the property was inherited by his sons, who sold it to John Faulkner in 1875. Faulkner and his family lived there until John's death in 1901.
