56 Main St, Yankalilla

Yankalilla

Patrick Dahill and his wife Margaretha and six daughters came out to South Australia from Ireland in 1855 on the South Sea. They came down to Yankalilla and in 1860 Dahill bought 1 1/4 acres from J.W.Heathcote and built a house. It is thought that the house was rented out to the Josephite nuns before they moved to the house at 48 Main St. Patrick Dahill is described as a labourer, and was obviously one of the Irish labourers brought down to Yankalilla to work for the Council. Patrick Dahill died 15-12-1875 and Margaretha Dahill 7-5-1880. Both are buried in St Peters Catholic cemetery.

Later inhabitants of this house were the Hoskin family. James Turner Philip Hoskin junior was the son of a former convict who came from Tasmania to Adelaide after serving his sentence. He worked as a blacksmith at Myponga. James junior married Hannah Richardson, and they had eight children. James Hoskin died in 1899 while turning a grindstone at the Butterworth mill.
