66 Main St, Yankalilla

Yankalilla

This house was built by Scottish stonemason William Wood about 1856. Wood bought a 2 acre allotment from John Wordsworth Heathcote in 1856, and built this house as well as another house (68 Main St) and a store (70 Main St) on the allotment. This house was obviously well-built as the assessment for this property in 1857 was £25, which is a substantial amount for that time. Wood later designed the Yankalilla Council Chamber which was built in 1864.

Wood rented out the house for a number of years, notably to a series of doctors: Dr McIntyre (1857), Dr Stedman (1860), and Dr Parkin (1870). In 1874 William Wood went to Port Pirie with his brother James Wood, and they established a successful timber business there. In 1884 Wood sold the Yankalilla house to Joe Woodcock. Wood died at Port Pirie in 1900.
