70 Main St, Yankalilla
Yankalilla
Built about 1857 by stonemason William Wood, this store was rented by shoemaker James Allen. About 1860 it became a general store, operated by Alexander Smith, but he moved to a different location about 1865. The store was then taken over by Walter Kearney, followed by Cormack, and then by William Wood himself for a few years. Wood sold the property to William Mills in 1877, and he ran the store until his death in 1890.
In subsequent years the shop was leased to various people, including Samuel Clifford Taylor, Alfred Stock, Robert Reid & Co, Joseph Badge, Tom Wigley and Alexander Mitchell (1928). Mitchell also operated the Avon store on Main South Rd (currently Drakes), and so this store at the top end of the street was known as the 'Top Shop'. In 1973 the new owners set up the Golf-T company here and manufactured gold clubs in the shed at the back of the shop.
