8557 Main South Rd, Delamere
Delamere
The original part of this house was probably built about 1854 by Thomas Smith, who presumably lived in it until 1862, when he moved to Cape Jervis. In 1863 he sold the property to James Cole and Joel Cole, who in 1865 sold it on to W.H.Limbert, storekeeper at Second Valley.
From about 1865 to 1896 it was used for the Delamere post office, and for some of that time also as a store. The storekeepers over the years included Alfred Limbert, William Whyte, and Francis Appleton. Charles Williss was the postmaster from about 1886 until his death in 1894, after which his widow Elizabeth continued to run the post office. In 1896 the house was sold to Mary Cole (wife of Joel Cole), and on her death 1914 it passed to her daughter Elizabeth Christie. The property has been occupied for many years by various members of the Christie family.
