90 Main St, Yankalilla

Yankalilla

James Wood, a carpenter, built a house and shop on this allotment about 1868, probably with the help of his brother William Wood, who was a stone mason. Both James and William left the district in 1874 and went to Port Pirie, where they established a timber business named Wood & Co.

This property was rented out for a few years and then sold in 1880 to John Dufty. It was used for a short time by Dufty’s brother-in-law Alfred Newman, who had a saddlery business, but from about 1884 it was leased by Joseph Bird and then bought by him in 1895. Joseph Bird was the first of a long line of butchers to have their business here. After Bird came butchers Arthur McArthur, Thomas Symonds, Milton George Symonds, Albert Mervyn Bennett and finally Allan Cotton. It is currently the Senior Citizens’ Op Shop.
