Bible Christian Cemetery
281 Torrens Vale Rd, Torrens Vale
This cemetery was near the Bible Christian Church, Dairy Flat. The first recorded burial was that of John Mugfur, who died 19 June, 1856.
In February 1856 Rev Charles Lee junior arrived in South Australia on the 'Albermarle', and he was directed to proceed to Dairy Flat (now Torrens Vale) to conduct a day school and on Sundays take religious services. Lee continued in this role until his death in 1872.
Lee was buried in the cemetery, next to his first wife, Caroline, who had died in 1868. Another clergyman buried here was Rev George Gill, who died of typhus in 1861, at the young age of 24 years. He is said to have been the first Bible Christian minister to die in Australia. The cemetery continued to be used until at least 1919, when Amelia Ann Hawke, the wife of Nicholas Hawke, was buried there. Their daughter Selina Hawke is also thought to have been buried here in 1927.
