Bungala House

34 Main St, Yankalilla

Bungala House started out as a small cottage built by Henry Morris about 1855. In 1860 the land was sold to the Butterworth brothers who operating the nearby flour mill. About 1866 Eli Butterworth enlarged the house, adding the front section.

Eli Butterworth died in 1886 and the house was bought by Harry Graham for the use of his brother Fred Malcolm Graham. Graham added the side wings in 1891 and he turned the house into a fine mansion with extensive gardens.

After his death in 1911 his widow and family moved to England and Bungala House was let to Mr & Mrs F.W.Rymill, relatives of the Graham family. In 1923 the house was sold and was used as a guest house until the 1960s. It was then unoccupied for a few years and suffered from the effects of neglect and vandalism until rescued new owners M.Lines and B.Treloar, who commenced restoration, which was continued by subsequent owners Mark and Jill Pearse.
