Christ Church Yankalilla

132 Main South Road, Yankalilla

State Heritage Place No 10465.

Land for the church was donated by Thomas Roads, who built the church. It was dedicated on 9 July 1857 by Augustus Short, the first Anglican bishop of Adelaide.

At that time the church consisted of a nave only, but a porch, chancel and vestry were added later. The chancel, added in 1879, was dedicated to the memory of the children of Dr and Mrs Stokes Millner. They were among the first scholars of the Christ Church day school, and had tragically drowned with their father and step-mother in 1875 in the wreck of the Gothenburg. The latest addition was in 1995 when the vestry was extended.

The church contains many historic items, including a font which was donated to Christ Church by Salisbury Cathedral in England and which dates back to possibly the 1660s (graffiti is scratched into the surface of the font: Thomas Croker 1719).
