Clio/Hope Farm

8176 Main South Rd, Delamere

This house is on land which was owned by James Lord in the 1870s and the property was known as 'Hope Farm'. In 1887 it was bought by Charles Whitford Fowles, and he had the house built about 1890 and named it 'Clio'.

Charles Whitford Fowles was the son of Thomas Fowles, the first head lightkeeper at the new Cape Jervis lighthouse. Charles worked as the telegraph operator there, and then in 1882 became the assistant keeper with his father. In 1888 he retired from the Light House service and moved to the farm. About 1901 Fowles moved to Adelaide for the education of his children. 'Clio' was then managed by John Henry Morris and family for a number of years. Charles Fowles died in 1917, and the land was then leased out to Charles' son, Willoughby Limbert Fowles, and then transferred to him in 1924.

The property is currently known as 'Darham Springs'.
