Former Institute
117 Main South Rd, Yankalilla
This building was originally a shoe shop. It was built about 1868 by bootmaker Joseph Currie, who bought the land from Thomas Willson in that year. Currie carried on his bootmaking business from this shop for many years. Currie died in 1903, aged 85 years.
From 1905 it was owned by Harriet Putland (daughter of bootmaker John Fowler and wife of George Putland of Rose Cottage) and she rented it out. From 1908 it was used by the Yankalilla Institute and housed their reading room. It was also used by the stock agents Bagot, Shakes & Lewis Ltd. In 1910 the building housed a temporary post office while the new Yankalilla post office was being built. In more recent times the store was used as a gift shop called Peppertree Store, with Lilla's caf' in the rear of the shop. It is now a private home.
