Hawke house

30 Parawa Rd, Torrens Vale

This house was built about 1854 by Nicholas Hawke, and improved about 1860. Nicholas Hawke, a labourer from Cornwall, arrived in South Australian on 23 November 1850 on the 'Joseph Somes'. In 1854 he married Amelia Ann Teague, and they had eleven children over the next 23 years.

As well as farming his own land and taking on outside work, Hawke was District Constable in 1862, and served on the District Council in 1863 and 1878. He died on 26 September 1882, and was buried in the Dairy Flat Bible Christian cemetery not far from his home. Amelia Ann Hawke died at Torrens Vale on 27 September 1919 at the age of 84 years. She was buried with her husband in the Bible Christian cemetery. The headstone is still visible.
