Leonard's Mill
Main South Rd, Second Valley
State Heritage Place No 10347.
The land for the mill was purchased from the South Australian Company by the Leonard family of millers in 1858. The three-storey steam-driven flour mill was built by 1859, operated by John Clover Leonard, who lived in the mill house and brother James Leonard who lived in nearby Palm House, where they operated a store. The Leonards were instrumental in establishing the Wesleyan chapel at Second Valley and the institute. When the production of wheat declined in the Yankalilla district, the Leonard brothers were part of the migration to newly available land on Yorke Peninsula, moving to Wauraltee after selling the mill with associated land and buildings to W.H Roper in 1877 for £600.
Wheat grinding continued until 1890. When W.H. Roper died in 1893 the mill passed to his son George and it was used for grinding wattle bark until 1935. Later it was used as a shearing and storage shed. In 1984 the mill was sold and restored by architect David Grieve and has been used until recently as a restaurant.
