Little house

Hay Flat Rd, Hay Flat, near Ingalalla Falls

Now a ruin, this cottage was built for Margaret Little, probably about 1854 soon after she bought the land. It was built to replace a slab cottage which was on the property.

Margaret Little, widow of Edward Little, a merchant of Liverpool, arrived in South Australia on the 'Sarah Alida Maria' on 2 August 1853. She had ten children, and most of these seem to have come out with her. She and her family came down to Hay Flat in early 1854. Mrs Little rented the nearby homestead 'Hillside', the former home of George William Field, until her own home was built. Her daughter Margaret Cochrane Little revelled in the freedom life in the country gave her, and she wrote a very enthusiastic letter about her life here, which was published in the newspapers in 1855 under the title 'An Australian Bush Picture'.

The Little family moved away from the district about 1863 and went to Alberton.
