No 10 Radar Station

Campbell Hill Summit, Rarkang Rd, Cape Jervis

State Heritage Place No 20963.

Becoming operational in April 1943 as one of only two radar stations commissioned in SA, No. 10 Radar Station's purpose was to detect possible enemy attacks from the air or sea. It was built on Campbell Hill near Cape Jervis, with a good view of Backstairs Passage. The radar station was equipped with Light Weight Air Warning (LWAW) equipment. It was operated mainly by approximately 50 Women's Australian Air Force (WAAAF) personnel.

The radar station was camouflaged to look like a ruined farmhouse. The staff quarters were in a nearby gully with the huts laid out to resemble sheep shearing sheds and other farm buildings. The radar station ceased operation in September 1944, but was briefly made operational again in December 1944 after the German submarine U-862 appeared off the South Australian coast. The radar stations were finally disbanded in November 1945.

The radar station was confirmed as a State Heritage Place on 10 May 2013.
