Robert Norman Chapel

51 Norman Avenue

Robert Norman bought section 1031 in 1849 and established a vineyard, which was managed for him (from about 1875 by Alfred Martin senior). Robert Norman, South Australia's first dentist, lived at Belle Vue House in North Terrace Adelaide. By 1857 Norman had built a chapel on his land, with a vault where it was intended that members of the Norman family were to be buried. However, the chapel was used to store casks of wine, and when his wife died in 1867 there was not room in the chapel for her burial, and so she was buried among the vines not far from the chapel.

After the death of Robert Norman in 1883 the section (not including the family cemetery) was bought by John Sampson Torr, who in 1900 sold the northern part (which included the chapel) to Christian Rigert. In 1909 he sold it to well-known local identity Robert Beaumont Clark. The land has changed hands a number of times since then, and the chapel undergone modifications.
