Rockwella

Stone Rd, Torrens Vale

This chapel is on section 366, which was bought by Richard Stone in 1867. That same year he donated part of the section to trustees for a new Baptist chapel. Richard Stone was a stonemason, and it is said that he built the chapel for his wife Eliza, who subsequently taught in the Sunday School.

Use of the church seems to have been intermittent. According to one report it closed in 1879 due to internal bickering, but it was used in 1895 for the golden wedding celebration for Richard and Eliza. It was reopened in 1936 and was used as part of the Methodist circuit for about ten years. After 1946 it was left derelict and was used as a storage shed.

The land was bought by Douglas Ralph Hurrell and wife Helene in 1979, and when their daughter Nerida got engaged in 1986, Ralph decided to restore the church so that it could be used for the wedding.
