Second Valley Sea Wall

Second Valley

State Heritage Place No 13215.

In 1854 plans were drawn up for a wharf at Second Valley, on what is now known as the 'Island'. The plans included a single track tramway and causeway. The wharf, built of stone, was used by many ships for a few years. However, a storm in July 1867 caused most of the wharf to be washed away.

A short jetty (at the site of the present jetty) was built in 1870 and this was in use until 1910, when it was demolished and replaced with a new jetty. The 'Karatta' was a regular visitor to Second Valley, picking up cargo and passengers, on its way to and from Kangaroo Island.

The State Heritage Register describes these structures as 'a rare complex on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The 1855 stonework and the 1910 jetty represent a link to South Australia's maritime, agricultural, industrial and mining heritage, most notably the wheat industry of the 1840s - 1860s.'

Confirmed as a State Heritage Place 11 June 1998.
