St James Anglican Church
Main South Rd, Delamere
State Heritage Place No 14058.
The moving force behind getting the church built was Rev Charles William Morse (later Archdeacon Morse). He was appointed to the Yankalilla parish (which included the Delamere district) in December 1868. He very soon established regular services in this area, and strenuously advocated the building of a church.
The land for the church was donated by James Cole in 1870. The foundation stone was laid on 19 September 1870 and the church was opened on 4 May 1871 by Bishop Augustus Short, the first bishop of Adelaide, with the Governor, Sir James Fergusson, in attendance. The church was designed by W.F. Anderson, and the interior roof lining and the fittings, which are solid cedar, were the work of Yankalilla builders Klopp and Roads.
The cemetery was consecrated on the same day as the church. The first person buried in the cemetery was James Cole (8 August 1872).
