The Olives
227 Salt Creek Rd
State Heritage Place No 10349.
This house was built in stages by William Sharrad, who came out to South Australia in 1848 on the 'Baboo'. He acquired the land (section 1165) in 1856. It is thought that the back rooms of the house were built first with bricks brought out as ships' ballast, and subsequently (probably in the early 1860s) the front section with its underground room was added.
Sharrad married Ann Carter (who had also been on the 'Baboo') shortly after arriving in South Australia. Together they had seven children. Ann died in 1882, and a few months later Sharrad married widow Mary Ann Simpson. Sharrad died in 1893 and was buried in Christ Church cemetery.
The house later fell into decay, until in 1976 it was bought by Eric and Edith von Schramek and beautifully restored.
The Olives was confirmed as State Heritage Place on 24 July 1980. This site is on private property.
