Wall and Irrigation Channel

Rapid Bay Rd

State Heritage No 13212.

The history of this wall with an irrigation channel on top is unclear. The wall runs alongside the road into Rapid Bay. The land was at one stage part of William Gerrard's Yoho Station, and he is thought to have started an irrigation system for his property. This early irrigation system was probably extended at a later date when the land belonged to the Croser family.

The 1985 Heritage survey stated: 'Croser's property was originally part of Wm. Gerard's Yoho station, and was known as 'Duck's Hut'. Gerard split up Yoho, certainly prior to 1878 (although Gerard's stud was not dispersed until 1880). The irrigation system was, supposedly, based on Gerard's ideas at Yoho, and could have been built c 1860s-1870s, however, it may be of a later date and designed by the local inventor Garnet Kelly'.

Confirmed as a State Heritage Place 24 July 1980.
