Yoho Stallion House

Yoho Road, Delamere

State Heritage Place No 14059.

The State Heritage Register describes this building as follows: "The stallion house of Yoho station was built for William Gerrard, who was the pioneer breeder of blood stock in South Australia. Gerrard owned Yoho station, 6,000 acres of freehold land at Rapid Bay, and in 1861 began the breeding of thoroughbred horses. The stud dispersed in 1880. The stallion house was once described by a visitor as being, 'a palace as compared with the domicile for the men folk.'

William Gerard came to South Australia as a child with his mother in 1839. Soon after arriving his mother married Patrick Boyce Coglin. Gerard married Sarah Ann Lord at St James Delamere in 1879 and they had two children. William Gerrard died prematurely at Glenelg on 30 July 1884, aged just 45 years, and was interred in the Coglin family vault in West Terrace Cemetery.
